Managing your puppy or kitten’s environment can help prevent bad habits from developing. Young animals must be under constant supervision. This is crucial for house training and for teaching pets to chew or scratch their toys rather than your couch or tennis shoes. When there is no one available to supervise your puppy, a crate or baby gate can be used to keep them in a “puppy-proof” area, or you can use a leash and tether him/her to you or an object near you. For kittens, you may need to simply close doors to certain areas of the house. Don’t give your pet a chance to start undesirable behaviors, and be sure to encourage and reward good behaviors with positive attention and treats.
